Pateh doozi, one of Iran’s traditional embroidery styles, is practised in Kerman, Iran, situated to the south of the Kavir Desert. Since 1294 AH (18th century), this embroidery has become the principal symbol of Kerman’s craftsmanship, reflecting the artistic identity of the city and Persian symbolism. Passed down through the centuries, this knowledge is handed down by the elders to new generations, as a source of collective and individual Iranian pride. Its themes, closely linked to symbols of flora and fauna, allow for the creation of a natural imagery that does not exist in the outside world; due to the region’s perennially arid climate, the landscape is characterised by
sparse vegetation. As if they were a window onto a hypothetical scene, these embroideries fill family homes, bringing colour and natural forms into their interiors.
Breaking with the traditional canon of embroidery, this composition conceals messages and testimonies of hope and freedom, disguised within the patterns and their symbolism.

Pateh doozi is a traditional form of embroidery from the city of Kerman, Iran, which has been passed down from generation to generation through the continuity of knowledge, shaping regional and family identity. This generational timeline is interrupted by a physical, disfiguring and alienating distance from cultural and personal identity. It is through the revival of these small family rituals that the process of self-learning intersects with the need to give substance to that which, due to family distance, has been pushed aside.

‘Tell and Forget’ is a performance-essay that stems from a reflection on episodes of xenophobia and Islamophobia, in which family and personal memories are explored through a relaxed monologue. In an intimate moment with the audience, stories are shared about the reality of the Middle East and the virtual nature of family relationships into which this distance has been translated.
Simultaneously with the performance’s soundscape, in a slow, deliberate act, phrases are written on small cards containing comments and experiences of discrimination or prejudice, which are later distributed individually to the audience.
